Secure the Val-Joly dam
Project management for the repair of the joints of the Val Joly dam
Project
description
Built in 1968 by EDF, its original purpose was to supply cooling water to the Pont-de-Sambre thermal power station. Following its closure in 1998, the dam now has two main functions:
- To regulate the flow of the Helpe majeur, in particular by protecting downstream areas from flooding, and preserving water resources in the event of drought;
- Thanks to its lake and its departmental park, it is a tourist area offering water sports and fishing activities.
Missions
& Services
BRL Ingénierie was asked by the Nord département, which is now responsible for its management, to help make this structure safe through two main tasks:
- To diagnose the deterioration of the joints on the upstream face and propose repair solutions that are compatible with the mechanical operation of the structure;
- Add guard gates to the drainage systems and design a customised cofferdam system to allow work to be carried out out of the water.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDD) of the United Nations

"The vast majority of dams in France are ageing. To ensure the safety of these structures, they need to be rehabilitated, an area where innovation is king. Each solution for improving the resilience of these infrastructures has to be tailor-made: a real challenge for our engineers! "
